Introduction to Back Base Knowledge of Coated Abrasives
What is a dorsal base? The back base is actually the carrier of the abrasive used in the coated grinding tool, also known as the foundation of the coated grinding tool.
Common types of backbones include the following:
Paper base: The paper base used for coating grinding tools is manufactured according to special manufacturing standards. The coated grinding tool with paper-based backing is relatively flat and has unique adhesive strength, elasticity, weight, moisture absorption ability, and waterproof ability. Suitable for applications with low pressure and requiring adhesion to the surface of the workpiece during application.
Characteristics of paper-based materials:
| Paper Base | weight | Charictristics | Application |
| A | <80g/m2 | easy to curve | Hand use |
| B | 80-150g/m2 | easy to curve | Hand use |
| C | 105-125g/m2 | easy to curve/harder | Hand use, Eccentric machine |
| D | 125-160g/m2 | easy to curve/harder | Hand use, Eccentric machine |
| E | 220-250g/m2 | Harder | Sanding Belt |
| F | 250-320g/m2 | Harder |
Wide Sanding Belt, narrow Sanding Belt.

Buki: Buki is usually composed of cotton cloth, polyester cloth, polyester nylon, synthetic fibers, and a blend of cotton and polyester cloth. In fabric, polyester nylon is stronger, straighter, and more expensive than polyester fabric. Polyester blended fabric is a blend of polyester cloth and cotton cloth, which has good strength, waterproofness, and flexibility.
Cotton fabric is woven from natural fibers, but it is not waterproof and has a relatively light weight and good flexibility Artificial fibers are stronger than cotton fabrics, waterproof, and can be made by mixing natural fibers with artificial fibers;
Polyester fabric is woven from fibers that are stronger than cotton and synthetic fibers, and has waterproof properties, good load-bearing capacity, and wear resistance.
Characteristics of Buki:
| Base Weight | Strength | Characteristics | Application |
| Jwt cotton cloth base | 140 | light and flexible | fitness |
| Jwt polyester cloth base | 170 | waterproof, strong and flexible | finishing |
| Xwt cotton cloth base | 210 | Flexible | after-processing |
| Xwt polyester cloth base | 300 | Strong | middle grinding |
| Ywt polyester cloth base | 350 | Strong and not easy to wear. | high pressure |
| Hwt polyester cloth base | 350 | Strong and straight | Width sanding belt |
| polyester nylon base | 410 | More Stronger | Heavy Grinding |
Composite backing: This backing is made by bonding E-paper base and cloth base. It has good load-bearing capacity and a flat bottom surface, which can have better ductility than paper-based materials.
The fiber backing is made by mixing hardened paper and cotton cloth. It is usually used to make sand discs with a straight back base, with thicknesses of 0.6mm, 0.8mm, and 1.0mm. Thicker fiber backing is used to make straight sand discs, suitable for strong cutting, while thinner backing is used to make sand discs with better elasticity.
Sieve shaped dorsal base: The sieve shaped dorsal base is composed of many mesh like structures. It is woven from polyester fibers and bonded with ground mineral sand. Its open mesh can effectively prevent clogging caused by grinding materials. The mesh specifications are usually 18 x18 and 21 x21.
Polyester film backing: This backing is made of smooth polyester film and coated with fine-grained ground mineral sand. This type of backing can provide consistent machining accuracy and lower roughness values.
