Definition and Classification of Coated Grinding Tools Industry

Coated grinding tools refer to grinding tools made by adhering abrasives to flexible substrates (such as cloth or paper) with adhesives. Together with grinding wheels, sand tiles, oilstones, grinding heads, and grinding pastes, they form the six major varieties of grinding tools. Coating grinding has sheet shaped (rectangular), circular, ring-shaped, and other special shapes. The main varieties include sanding cloth (paper) and sanding belt, which are often used in mechanical or manual operations. They are widely used for grinding, polishing, and polishing non-metallic materials such as metal materials, wood, ceramics, plastics, leather, rubber, and paint putty. According to the "Classification and Codes of National Economic Industries" formulated by the National Bureau of Statistics, China classifies coated grinding tools as graphite and other non-metallic mineral products manufacturing (C319) in the non-metallic mineral products industry (National Bureau of Statistics code 31) (National Bureau of Statistics code 3199).

Classification of main products in the coating and grinding tool industry
Coated grinding tools are composed of three parts: substrate, abrasive, and binder. According to the different substrates, abrasives, and binders, coated grinding tools can be divided into numerous varieties with different properties and uses.

◆ Classified by substrate and usage method

Coated grinding tools are divided into dry sanding cloth, water-resistant sanding cloth, dry sanding paper, and water-resistant sandpaper.

◆ Classification based on adhesive and substrate treatment

Coated grinding tools are divided into four categories: animal adhesive bonded coated grinding tools, resin bonded coated grinding tools, all resin bonded coated grinding tools, and water-resistant coated grinding tools.

◆ Classified by abrasive material and particle size

The abrasive material represents the type and performance of the abrasive, while the abrasive particle size represents the size and distribution of the abrasive particles. Different abrasive materials and particle sizes can be classified into different types of coated grinding tools. In addition, there is another code for dry sandpaper and water-resistant sandpaper, which are still used in the market for different particle sizes.

◆ Classified according to the density of planting sand

The sand density represents the density of abrasive particles on the surface of the coated grinding tool. The planting sand density of coated grinding tools is divided into dense planting sand (CL) and sparse planting sand (OP).

◆ Classify according to product shape

Coated grinding tools can be divided into page shaped, roll shaped, belt shaped, disc shaped, and shaped products according to their shape.
