What are the key techniques for refining the grinding process, from rough grinding to polishing?

- Sep 27, 2025-

The detailed grinding process, especially when applied to plastic molds or plastic products, involves a series of key techniques and precautions, from rough grinding to polishing:

First, Rough Grinding Stage:

• Stock Removal and Defect Treatment: First, use a coarser grinding wheel or sandpaper (e.g., P80-P320 grit) to remove large stock, burrs, tool marks, and other noticeable defects on the workpiece.

• Even Grinding: Maintain steady pressure and motion to ensure even force across the entire surface to avoid unevenness.

• Cooling and Lubrication: During the rough grinding process, you may need to apply coolant or lubricant to prevent deformation or burning of the plastic material due to high friction temperatures.

Second, Fine Grinding:
• Gradually Increase Sandpaper Grit: Once the rough grinding marks are eliminated, switch to finer sandpaper (e.g., P400-P1000 grit) to further smooth the surface and reduce surface roughness.

• Careful Inspection: After each step, carefully inspect the surface for scratches or uneven areas, and correct them promptly.
Third, Semi-Fine and Fine Grinding:

• Fine Finishing: Continue using sandpaper with higher grits (e.g., P1000 and above, up to P5000 or more) to achieve a finer and smoother surface.
• Control Pressure: As the sandpaper grit becomes finer, sand more gently to avoid creating new scratches or damaging the nearly finished surface.
Fourth, Polishing:

• Polishing Tools and Media: Use polishing cloths, wool wheels, and polishing paste or diamond abrasive paste to enhance surface gloss.
• Low-Speed Fine Polishing: Polishing should be performed at a lower speed to better control contact pressure and temperature, reducing internal stress buildup. • Observation and inspection: Use light sources to inspect the surface from different angles to confirm that there are no obvious scratches, holes or color differences to achieve the ideal mirror effect.

In short, every stage from rough grinding to polishing requires careful operation and precise control, and constant adjustment of tools and process parameters to adapt to different plastic materials and mold structure characteristics. At the same time, good patience and practical experience are also key factors to ensure high-quality polishing results.
